Metroparks Toledo — Glass City Metropark, Toledo, Ohio
Mini Maumee Vault Equipment Replacement
The Mini Maumee is one of Glass City Metropark’s most-used public features — a scaled interactive water feature that draws families from across Toledo through the summer months. Everything that makes it run sits out of sight, in an underground equipment vault beneath the park. When water intrusion damaged the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment inside that vault, the feature went offline and Metroparks Toledo needed it back before the season ended.
IPS was awarded the bid-build contract to selectively demolish the damaged equipment and furnish and install in-kind replacements to reestablish full functionality of the feature and its supporting systems. The scope covered the complete equipment package: the water feature pump and recirculation pump, media filter, UV and chemical controllers, main control panel, power panels, lighting control panels, and Accutab and Acid-Rite chemical feed equipment. IPS also demolished and reinstalled all power and control wiring serving the vault, and added two upgrades to protect the new investment — an actuated water fill solenoid and a high floor flood alarm system to detect standing water before it can reach the equipment again.
The work was self-performed across multiple IPS divisions in a confined, 695 SF below-grade space with no room for staging or sequencing errors. Electrical and controls, plumbing, HVAC, insulation, fabrication, and equipment setting all had to be coordinated in the same vault, on the same schedule, with a hard finish date set by the public calendar rather than the construction one. IPS mobilized in April and turned the feature back over to Metroparks Toledo in August — reopening the Mini Maumee in time for the public to enjoy the remaining days of summer.
